Low Volume Injection Molding (LVIM) is a manufacturing process used to produce small quantities of plastic parts. It is ideal for producing prototype parts, small-batch production runs, and for producing parts with complex geometries.

The process involves melting plastic pellets or granules and injecting the molten material into a mold cavity under high pressure. The mold cavity is designed to create the desired shape of the part. Types of Injection Molding

  3. Overmolding: Overmolding is similar to insert molding, but it involves adding an additional layer of material over an existing part or component. This process is often used for adding a soft-touch grip or other secondary features to a part.

  4. Gas-Assisted Injection Molding: In this process, a gas (usually nitrogen) is injected into the mold cavity to help fill the part with plastic material. This can help reduce warpage, improve surface finish, and reduce part weight.

  5. Co-Injection Molding: Co-injection molding, also known as sandwich molding or multi-shot molding, involves injecting two or more different materials into the mold cavity to create a part with multiple layers or components.

  6. Micro-Injection Molding: This process is used to produce very small and precise parts, typically with dimensions of less than 1 millimeter. It involves using a small injection machine and specialized molds.

  7. Liquid Injection Molding: In liquid injection molding, liquid silicone rubber is injected into a mold cavity to produce flexible and durable parts, such as seals, gaskets, and medical devices.

How Does Plastic Injection Molding Work?

Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process that involves the creation of plastic parts by injecting molten plastic material into a mold cavity. The process involves the following steps:

  1. Material selection: The first step is to select the appropriate plastic material for the part being produced. This can include thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics, elastomers, or other materials.

  2. Mold design: The next step is to design the mold, which will determine the shape and size of the part being produced. The mold is typically made of steel or aluminum and consists of two halves that fit together to form the mold cavity.

  3. Melt and inject: The plastic material is melted in a heating chamber and then injected into the mold cavity under high pressure. The molten plastic fills the mold and takes on the shape of the part being produced.

  4. Cooling and solidification: Once the mold cavity is filled, the plastic is cooled and solidified by circulating coolant through the mold. This process ensures that the plastic material solidifies in the desired shape and size.

  5. Ejection: Once the plastic has cooled and solidified, the mold is opened, and the part is ejected from the mold cavity. The ejection process may involve ejector pins or other mechanisms to remove the part from the mold.

  6. Finishing: The final step is to remove any excess material or flash from the part and perform any necessary finishing operations, such as trimming or surface treatment.
